The Sling Safety Conference hosted by Lift-It Manufacturing, Los Angeles, Calif., brought 105 participants together to learn about sling inspection and safety. Also included during the three-day seminar was a Train-the Trainer program.
The synthetic sling safety program was presented by Mike Gelskey, president, Lift-It Manufacturing. Gelskey has educated thousands of sling users and inspectors over the last 35 years. The program featured basic and advanced rigging. Fall prevention and product demonstrations were presented by Mark Langford, Capital Safety, Red Wing, Minn. Participants also toured the Lift-It production facility and watch fabrication and testing demonstrations.
The second day of the seminar featured a sling inspection program, which included hands-on inspection. Harley Gist of Construction/Rigging Consultants presented a hands-on rigging demonstration. Participants determined load weights, centers of gravity and witnessed the effects of sling angles and stress as variable sling lengths were used to lift loads.
A Train-the-Trainer program on day three provided discussion and instruction in the successful presentation of the principles for successful rigging.
"We were particularly impressed by the interaction and participation of the attendees,” Gelskey said. “I was also very grateful for the many kind words from many of the participants during the shop tour. It was also very inspiring to see outstanding attendance at a time when travel and safety related expenses are being cut by many businesses.”
The next presentation of the Sling Safety Program is scheduled for Oct. 27-28, 2009, with a Train-the-Trainer program on Oct. 29. Early registrations are encouraged. The class size is deliberately limited for maximum benefit and participation.
